It was late Saturday and the L&T and I were blasting our way up the Upper Sacramento River canyon – new, cranky daughter in the car seat and two barely conscious adults piloting – when the October Caddis started bouncing off the windshield (more on the trip later). Sometimes, an unfortunate group of pumpkin-colored caddis sometimes mistake the I5 freeway for a river, forming up over the asphalt ribbon in ill-fated mating flights, and while cruel ironies are always appreciated at the Underg

“I Have Mad Skills”
You may have mad skills, Alex O’Loughlin, but you might want to pick up a copy of Joan Wulff’s “Dynamics of Fly Casting” before going trout fishing again. The idea is for the fly line to gradually release it’s kinetic energy; that bullwhip crack is the noise of wasted effort. “I grew up fishing for trout. I’m not the best fly fisherman, but I can fly-fish, because I crack a whip . I learned to crack a whip as a boy, out on the properties.” We’ll still watch you on “Three Rivers,” though.

CEDAR BLUFF STILLING BASIN DELAYS TROUT STOCKING
First stocking scheduled for Oct. 19, four days after season opener PRATT — The Kansas trout season begins Oct. 15 and runs through April 15. Most trout waters will be stocked on that date, but Cedar Bluff Stilling Basin, originally scheduled for stocking on the opening day of trout season, won’t be stocking until Monday, Oct. 19, provided water turnover is complete and water quality is suitable. Forgotten Trout
By Bob Romano Looking up at the hemlocks, you would never guess that they are dying. These trees, many over seventy feet tall, are plagued by the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, an exotic pest infesting many stands throughout the northeast. I suppose one should be grateful that it has been a slow process, each season a few more trees falling to the forest floor, others losing their needles. The shade cast by this forest insures that the temperature of the little stream that runs through it remains cool

The Panic Bloom : The U.S. could well be in the midst of a panic bloom. As noted by Gabor Steingart in 2006 —brilliantly foretelling of the global economic crisis to come—right before a plant is about to die, it produces “one last batch of healthy shoots.” These, he writes, “can hardly be distinguished from healthy plants.” And so it is with the U.S. economic recovery that, some misguided analysts conclude is now fully underway. Fishing the Free Markets : I found a stretch of river with po

Advice On Lake Fishing.
by Michael Adams Lake fishing is very similar to river fishing, or slow-flowing river fishing at any rate. The types of fish in rivers and lakes tend to be the same, which means that the tackle, bait and lures will be the same as well, although you might want a longer fishing rod, say, a beach-casting rod to cast your bait farther out into the lake. Lake fish will often mature to a larger size than river fish, so your line should be stronger too. Lake fish traditionally been classed under th

North Carolina Adds Wilson Creek to Delayed-Harvest Streams
North Carolina now has 22 “delayed-harvest” trout streams (they open for fishing October 1, but you can’t keep any fish until June), and the latest to join that list is Wilson Creek in Caldwell County , where the state recently stocked 4,700 brookies, rainbows and browns. “Novice anglers like the streams because of the abundance of fish; the Wilson Creek stocking averaged about 1,500 trout per stream mile. Experienced anglers seek them to hone their skills before heading for a wild trout strea

Foster Lake Lodge, Five-Star Dining Spiced with a Little Fishing
After visiting about a dozen fishing lodges in northern Saskatchewan, we’re starting to notice a lot of similarities, especially the fishing and environs, but we had no problem seeing how Foster Lake Lodge stands apart from the rest. The lodge is located on Middle Foster Lake, which is just another amazingly pristine wilderness lake loaded with lake trout and northern pike, but the only lodge on this sprawling shield lake is like no other fishing camp or resort in the province.
