Authors Of Science Fiction Books Are Modern Day Story Tellers Of The Future

Science fiction books have many fans and many sub genres. It is a nearly endless category of literature than seems to have an insatiable readership and many different “worlds” an author can present their characters in. These are novels based on futuristic science or imaginary scientific philosophies and technological creations, that are usually set within another world.

These types of novels are similar to fantasy type novels but, technically they are separate. Fantasy novels tend to have no basis in reality, whereas, sci-fi will mix the real and the unreal with the really exaggerated. Sci-fi explores human logic set in a faraway future or made up past. It takes today’s technology and takes to something not yet possible or even dreamed of. It takes ideas and concepts and puts them forth in story form, so that the reader is uncertain of the agenda yet, caught up in the journey.

Sci-fi fans must, and are willing to, put aside disbelief and logic to allow themselves to go along with the plot. Without this leap of faith, there is no readership. The author must be skilled enough to weave a story together, where the characters involved, however fantastical, are behaving in ways the make sense within the story. Of course, the time frame and events are never current.

Characters that are mutants, a mechanical or technological creations, conjured up creatures or space aliens are a mandatory part of the genre. Exploring the consequences of certain political, social, cultural and paranormal phenomenon are all aspects of the sci-fi genre. Readers love this as it pushes their imagination and they tend to become devoted to the authors and their books.

Sci-fi literature has been harshly criticized by many who believe the language is over simplified and lacks anything profound or even creative in its essence. The argument is that plain and clear language is not mutually exclusive with creativity and good story telling.

A well known fiction author is quoted as saying that quite a few literary professors would be out of a job, if it was commonly accepted by the general public, that they don’t need to wade through complex language to read a good story. Sci-fi novels are often slammed for being too straightforward and simplistic in their writing.

Stories are about characters, real or imagined. A novel needs to be told through the eyes of a character, otherwise the author is a historian or technical writer, not a novelist. This is what authors of great science fiction books do; they set out imaginations a flame with new ideas told through the words and actions of a character on the page.
